Santa Maria della Salute

Built and dedicated by the Venetians to the Virgin Mary in thanks for the end of the 1630 plague, it was begun by Baldassare Longhena in 1632 but not completed until five years after his death in 1687. Each November Venetians build a bridge of across the mouth of the grand Canal and worshippers walk over the water to La Salute, which means health and salvation.
