Ferrara - The Jewish Quarter

This is the main street of what had been the Ghetto of Ferrara; today there is only one remaining active synagogue.  Historically, Jews from all over Europe had been welcomed by the Este family and there
was once a strong and vigorous community here. The Ghetto came into being in 1627  set up by the papal government after the liberal policy of the Estes was ended by a revolution in 1598.  On a memorial tablet in the front listing those who died at the hands of the Nazis we see many entries bearing the name, Finzi   bringing to mind  the tragically searing film The Garden of the Finzi Contini . The warm  and gentle colors of the buildings make the horrors of the past hard to believe;  the Memorial tablet makes it all too real.
